This "date" I have conviently nicknamed the "framily" date because Christopher said it was a big family day and I said we weren't all family... so he said family/friend day... but everyone there (minus one guy I dont know his name) had at least one family member there... so... it's the framily date.
Like every good story this one has a twisted beginning. After a 30 minute wait for a cd burning and a discussion how Fort Worth (from Dallas) was a 12 hour drive, thank you GPS, we were on our way! Burgers Lake in Fort Worth, Texas (http://www.burgerslake.com/) was to host us for the day, for this Framily Date. Music up, boys being goofy in the back seat we embark on the drive to Fort Worth. Singing, listening to Christopher whine about Cletus (my Honda Accord) pulling to the right, me reminding him every 20 minutes we really need to get charcoal all while being followed by some friends behind us. We completely miss the exit that the GPS thing tells us to turn on... but amazing human GPS Christopher was going on "insincts" (as all women insinctively roll their eyes collectively as they read this). I chime in "we still need charcoal." (I guess its the mens turn to eye roll...)
"Do you think Target has charcoal?"
Our stop at Target is one of my favorite parts. I had fun with Zach getting Charcoal, goggles, and a lighter. I am sure it was a sight for anyone who saw us. A girl who can't grill to save her life, a 9 year old boy who just looks at the charcoal trying to figure out why one bag was like $3.00 more than the other but was a smaller bag. Then I whip out my phone and make a phone call, hang up, call. Again and again like 15 times, to ask if we needed a lighter. Finally, Zach and I made a choice on what we were going to buy and headed out of Target. "lets go!!!!!!!!"
"Something happened to our car."
After heading out from Target we came to a Quick Trip "I think we go this way." "Really? You think? I thought you knew where we were going!" We look back and our friends had vanished. "Something happened to our car" So we turn around. Because there was nothing the men (after a period of them looking at it, talking about tow straps, and basically grunting and scratching their heads..) could do we sat and waited for the people who were coming to help them with their car. Why the boys and I had so much fun during this time I don't know but we did. Christopher read Zachs goggles instructions in a Chineese voice. Tre and Zach hung out the windows. They sipped on a Coke icee.
(Yea he wasn't so happy about this pic... oh well... read on)
Once we get to the lake we swim, play sand volleyball, cook burgers, hot dogs and sit in the sand. Yes, sand. Burgers Lake has sandy beaches (which only intensified my want to go to the beach.) I watched my baby and Zach play with Aiden in the lake while I talked with the peoples with us and dug my feet into the sand. The pure bliss that fills ones heart when the sand snakes its way between your toes. How your heart fills at the smiles and giggle of kids. The way summer seems to be designed for days like this with friends.
The day is over, the boys asleep. I am sunburnt and dead tired. I crawl into bed. What a great day. Things weren't perfect, but life never is. The kids argued and fought, but kids do that. There were more smiles than tears and more laughs then mean words. The magic of summer didn't escape this day even if it wasn't yet offically summer. Laughter, sun, that smell in the air you just can't quite explain or put your finger on its origin or the way it fills your lungs. This day filled with all these things was wonderful.
To fill your life wih loved ones be it family or friends, I am realizing, shouldn't be a summer time thing. Yes, summer air is twisted up in magic, but life should be twisted up with love. There are events, like time spent at the lake, that can only be enjoyed during the whirlwind of this magical time of year and no one could ever treasure these times more than I do.
